Where Your Muse's Come to Life

How Real is Rap Music?

I had this conversation with two of my friends tonight and wanted to get some outside opinion. How real is rap music? Is Rap just genre of people talking about stuff they’re never gone through only to connect to those who have? Or are they only talking about things that goes go on in the real world just not in their lives like they would want us to believe? But don’t get me wrong, if I was a rapper and I really had some money, I’m going to rock something nice myself. Nothing too extravagant but Stevie Wonder might see me shining, lol

The Real Debate
The argument that my friends were trying to make was that if you believe everything   rappers are saying. You know that they were the biggest drug dealer (please!!!), thug (poptart), killer (no comment)   yaddda yadda. They were trying to say the whole genre is made up of people pretending to be who they’re not. Making up personas or taking that of other real people in order to just entertain. They’re not showing their real self or making music with some real feelings behind it. If you look at other forms of music, the people are that making the music are real people for the most part, not just charactirtures of themselves or who they want to be.

I mean damn, if half of what these rappers are talking is real it’s like “Damn homie, why aren’t you in jail right now” lol. You have to admit that some of the shit that comes out of these rappers mouth is some outlandish shit.

I’m calling out all whack MCs.

I know you remember the line Jay-Z dropped on Ignorant Shit…..

“..don’t fear no rappers/ They’re all weirdos, DeNiros in practice/ So don’t believe everything  your earlobe captures…”

Which just puts the whole industry into perspective, there’s not much that these rappers are talking about that’s real. Now I can name a few good rappers who seem to not only be living what they spitting but also keeping the torch of hiphop lit while there at it. But it’s the weirdos I can’t fade. You know the dude who thinks he is nice but should be at UPS employment department grabbing up a real career. Or the Killer that poses with the guns and says he does this for real. Please homey save those rhymes for your so called crime family. Or how about the dude that just straight up sucks, but his braggadocious meter is on 99 and he lives with mom and still takes the bus rocking the chain his grandma gave him c’mon son in (Ed Lover voice). I’m calling these dudes out because I want to hear good music and not just Kayne imprint I am talking good rap music. So stop talking about all that stuff you don’t do and start spitting about the stuff you do do .

Let’s keep it 100!
When you keep it 100 and your rap is genuine people love you . I mean Fresh prince kept it 100 even though he got jiggy wit in the summertime (how many of caught that?). Oh that’s too old you say, well how about Lupe Fiasco .I mean one of few blacks who didn’t vote for Obama and get this he actually says why.

The ones that are really speaking what they live and do are very few in-between when compared to what

Good article with a good argument. Now I am going to give my breakdown. I want to start by saying I agree with the argument and yes there is a lot of bullshit in rap music! With that said though I want to pose another agrument…. What I want you to think about it is the fans. Not just “your” type of fans but all fans of rap music. I say that to say this, not all fans of rap music or music period for that matter listen to be educated or to even hear whats real. We live in a world during a time when you have a bunch of fake fickle fans that appreciate the fake bullshit thats portrayed in music. I am a fan of music and I appreciate artist that bring some real substance and background to there music. Thats cool….. but at 1:30am in the middle of a packed club we have all chanted along with some of the most dumbest lyrics and biggest lies out there. Take Rick Ross’s Hustlin for instance; that track had the whole club feeling like kingpins. Guys in girls in the club rapping along to every word and bouncing up and down to the beat like they all pitched raw. See what you listen to as a fan is your preference. The music wouldnt sell, venues would not be filled if there were no listeners. Personally I listen to the real and the fake. I love Lupe’s new track for its realness and the slick word play while talking about current events and the bullshit our govt cover ups. I am also that dude in the club looking for a bad chick when “No Hands” comes on though. Also when it comes to the lies about killers and drug dealers thats nothing new. You can go to any “Hood” and there are cats right there lying about the same shit. Thats why that music is so damn relavent. I believe that rap music is catch 22 anyhow. If you rap only consiously you get shunned. You make up a bunch a bullshit you get clowned. There actually needs to be some sort of balance! At the end of the day half the people I speak to in passing arent really living what the hell they are talking about…LOL!

I have come to the conclusion that rap music is entertainment first and expression second. If Lupe’s wordplay was not laid out with finesse would you listen? If Common did not paint the picture of the Corners so vividly would you buy in? See its okay for Wakka Flocka to sound all crazy on the air waves because IMO he is just entertaining . I think we must come to grips with that some artist will take the time and give the effort to truly express themselves, but most will stay on the surface.

I think in the end it’s what the person take out of the music that will make it real or not. If people simply see some of these rappers for what they are (entertainment purposes only) then that’s how they’re view must of the rap game. But if they view them seriously or want to, then they’ll feel like the game if fake because most of the shit that’s being said is fake.
